This is friends house, on canopy lane/hartshead sq, s1.
It’s an oddball, ostensibly a 30s era building with a church like layout left with no distinctive aspect at either end of the building. The curved rear (or front?) has an entrance on to campo lane whilst the main entrance opens to the square.
This appears a sort of slightly nondescript 20/30s style, which I am particularly fond of. Restrained and elegant, the building now lies empty, as the sign says, sale considered. I haven’t seen inside but it seems to contain a larger hall/auditorium and back offices which have most recently been occupied by, I think, an employment agency.
What could this attractive building be used for? At the boundry between the solicitors’ and argos’b’pound shops’ worlds. With general disinterest in buildings of this era it seems doomed for demolition (dont know if it is protected). Could the usual prospects of apartments or offices suit? How could its original layout be retained? More suited to a large bar or restaurant nowadays, though the size is the problem. Hartshead sq isltself is a bit of a failed space and some vitality on its western side would provide some focus but I hope that something can be found that doesn’t involve the loss of the building. Ideas welcome!
Remember when this happened in that building?
